Almost 30% of all holes in aircraft structures are drilled manually. Emerging electrical drilling units enable the acquisition of process data during these numerous operations. Data analysis and/or combination with additional information could optimise drilling process chains.
Together with a northern university institute we postulate several hypotheses on how to optimise detected challenges of manual drilling during serial aircraft assembly. In order to enhance drilling processes, detected measured values and their potential sensors are defined. A list of requirements for a laboratory smart manual drilling unit and supplementary equipment is defined and discussed with potential industrial suppliers of currently available electrical drilling units on the market.
